Westmore Association

Annual Meeting

After grace was offered by Bill Hartford, a delicious pot-luck supper was enjoyed by all during which Kimball Johnson of the Westmore Fire and Rescue Service thanked the Association for its support of his organization and then had a drawing and announced the winners of the raffle for miscellaneous prizes and kayaks.

Following dinner there was a speaker, Roger Thompson, Engineering Manager, Wastewater Management Division, Department of Environmental Conservation of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. Roger’s subject was how Vermont laws about water sources and sewerage systems would effect Vermonters in the future as well as today. Mr. Thompson distributed some informational handouts to the guests, followed by a brief explanation of the material and then answered many questions from the audience.

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 PM

Bob Drew, President, introduced the current Board of Directors and Officers and reminded the audience of the August 7, 7:30 PM date for the Green Mountain Follies.

The minutes of the July 28, 2005, Annual Meeting was accepted by the membership as approved by the BOD.

Treasurer’s Report: Greg Gallagher stated that the current balance in the checking account is $6,378.51 and the savings account balance is $891.00. The report was accepted as presented.

Scholarship Committee: Dick Simpson reported that as of this date the Association has awarded two scholarships of $500 each. Megan Valley accepted hers in person. Paul Rogers was not present.

Membership: Bob Drew reported that as of this date there are 224 member families which was about where we were at this juncture last year. At the end of the season there were 347 member families in 2005.

Beautification: Deborah Simpson reported that our four urns were planted this spring and watered this summer by volunteers. The Committee is currently working on plans to clear and plant the triangle by the church and the Town Clerk’s office with bulbs and perennials.

Milfoil Project: Dick Simpson reported that after a late start this summer, the Town approved a contract with Jeremy LeBlanc, who has a pontoon boat and 3 divers, to patrol and harvest the milfoil from active sites on the lake. Dick encouraged canoers and kayakers to help pick up and dispose of any milfoil seen floating on surface of the lake around the divers’ boat.

Water Quality: Ethan Swift passed around a sample in a jar of milfoil so that it can be properly identified by the members. Responding to a question from the audience, he stated that there are several options to control the growth of milfoil, but none that works permanently. Also there is much competition for the limited supply of divers in the surrounding area, including New Hampshire.

The algae problem was brought up by a member and was then addressed by Ethan and Art Brooks. The algae have been analyzed and do not consist of any Blue-green algae, which can cause allergic reactions on the skin of those coming in contact with it while wading or swimming. Instead the algae are Spirogyra, which does not cause this reaction. The Village Board is actively trying to find the source of the algae. Samples have been sent to Waterbury, but the results are not back yet.

Art went on to state that there have been no problems found in the E-coli samples sent to the state for testing last summer and this summer as of this date. The samples are taken and sent in every Monday.

Responding to an inquiry from the audience, Art stated that the depth of the lake is 1170 feet.

Trails and Wildlife: Paul Moffat reported that Mountain Day, which was postponed from Saturday, July 15 to July 22 due to heat and humidity, was successful. 10 climbers and 2 dogs climbed Haystack Mtn.

Paul recommended that we walk the 1.7 mile trail in the Town Forest.

The Green Mountain Club NE Kingdom Service Conservation Corps and the North Woods Stewardship Center have worked hard on the trails, with the Wheeler Mountain trails being the primary work area.

Nominating Committee: Carroll Guitar reported that the current slate of Officers up for election for 2006 is Bob Drew for President, Lee Anderson for Treasurer, Mary Drew for Clerk and Roger Canal for the Board of Directors.
